Air / Vacuum Valves – Large Orifice Valves

Purpose & Function

Air/Vacuum Valves, commonly known as Large Orifice Air Valves, are installed on water pipelines to manage large volumes of air during pipeline filling, draining, and abnormal operating conditions.

They perform two critical functions:

  • Air Release / Exhaust: During pipeline filling, the valve allows large volumes of trapped air to escape rapidly, preventing air pockets and reducing the risk of pressure surges.
  • Air Admission / Vacuum Protection: During pipeline draining or when negative pressure occurs, the float drops and the valve opens to admit atmospheric air. This prevents vacuum formation, pipeline collapse, excessive differential pressure, and water-column separation.
  • Pipeline Protection: Proper air management helps improve hydraulic performance and protects pipelines, pumps, valves, and other equipment from damage.
